Look out for tilly on your stay the family dog!

1.    Sandyhills Bay

One of the best dog-friendly beaches in Dumfries and Galloway is Sandyhills Bay. This large sandy beach has no dog restrictions. So, pups can run free on the sand, jump in the water, explore the rock pools, play frisbee, and stroll with their human. With plenty of shallow areas in the water, it’s the ideal location for your dog to take a dip in the water after spending the day running on the sand. You can find this beach near Colvend Golf Course. There’s also a car park for the beach with plenty of parking, making it easy to fit this spot into your itinerary.

Tip: Visit during low tide for an even more expansive beach area for dogs to run. Be sure to monitor the tide levels for safety.

2.    Cockle Shore Stranraer

This beachy spot is near Loch Ryan bay, on the eastern side of the port of Stranraer. It is known as one of the cleanest beaches in the region, offering picturesque views of Loch Ryan. Like Sandyhills Bay, there are no dog restrictions for this large sandy beach. However, it’s best to visit during low tide, as there is more space for dogs to run and play frisbee.

3.    Rockcliffe Beach

Another of the best dog-friendly beaches in Dumfries and Galloway is Rockcliffe Beach. This small stretch of sand is about five miles away from Sandyhills Bay, so it’s a great spot to take your dog if they still have energy. This beach is best for walking or strolling along the water, with multiple coastal walking trails available.

If you find yourself at this beach during low tide, you can take your pup for a swim to Rough Island’s nature sanctuary nearby. The sanctuary is open most of the year, except nesting season in May/June. As noted above, be sure to check the tide charts so you don’t get stranded on the island.

4.    Southerness Beach

If the view is your main priority, Southerness Beach should be at the top of your list. This beach is found in the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, offering incredible views of the Solway Firth and the Southerness Lighthouse. It’s the perfect location for grabbing a few pictures with your pup, especially with the Solway Firth in the background. During low tide, your furry friend will have plenty of space to roam, run, and catch frisbees. You’ll also find tide pools here to check out.
